Conversation starters for the first line
Conversation starters are ready first lines for texting a friend. Nearfolk has eight occasions, from a plain hello to a hard week, and each line can be made shorter, warmer or paired with a question. You edit the words, then send them from Messages. They live in the app and nothing is generated online.

Which occasions are covered?
There are eight: Just because, Reconnect, Birthday, Congrats, Hard week, Reply owed, A memory and Make plans. Each one has eight lines in the app, and the first three are free.
The lines are written in a warm, plain voice that sounds like a friend and not like a greeting card. They use the friend's first name where it fits, and they avoid guilt words.
| Occasion | Use it when | Sample opening |
|---|---|---|
| Just because | Nothing is wrong, you just thought of them | 'No reason, just wanted to check in on you.' |
| Reconnect | A long gap, and you want to start over | 'I know we drifted a bit and I would love to fix that.' |
| Birthday | A birthday is today or near | 'Happy birthday. Thank you for being one of my people.' |
| Reply owed | You are late and want to say so lightly | Short lines that name the delay without a long apology |
What do the lines sound like?
For a hard week, lines are gentle and ask for nothing: 'No need to reply, I am here if you want to talk', or 'No advice, just a hug through the phone'. For congratulations they are plain and glad: 'So proud of you. How does it feel?'. For making plans they offer a specific time: 'I am free Thursday evening. Dinner?'
Specific offers are easier to accept than open invitations, so the Make plans lines name a day, a place or a length of call.
How do Shorter, Add a question and Warmer work?
Each starter exists in a full and a short form. Shorter switches to the short form when you only have a minute. Add a question appends one friendly question, such as 'What made you laugh recently?' or 'Any plans for the weekend?'. Warmer puts a warm opening in front, such as 'Big hug first.' or 'You matter to me, so:'.
Another one shuffles to a different line for the same occasion. Edit lets you change any word. Copy puts the text on the clipboard, and Send message opens Apple Messages with the text in the body.
- Tap Reach out on a friend, or open Draft message.
- Choose the occasion.
- Tap Another one until a line feels right.
- Adjust it with Shorter, Add a question or Warmer, or edit by hand.
- Tap Send message, or Send as a card instead.
What if the friend has no phone number saved?
Nearfolk opens the share sheet with the text, so you can send it through any app: Messages, WhatsApp, email or anything else you have. The phone number on a profile is optional and is used only to open Messages or Phone for you.
How are the Russian lines written?
Nearfolk has the same eight occasions in Russian. The lines avoid forms that depend on the sender's gender, because the text goes to a friend under your name. They are written in the informal address that friends use with each other.
The app language follows your phone, or you can choose English or Russian in Me, then Language. The language of the card follows the setting at the time you make it.
Why offline, and why not an AI writer?
Starters are written in advance and stored in the app. No model writes them for you, and no part of your conversation leaves the phone. That keeps the app fast, free of accounts and consistent with how it treats privacy.
It also keeps the tone steady. Because the lines are fixed, the app cannot invent a clumsy sentence about your friend's loss or a joke that misses.
How do starters help with a long gap?
The Reconnect occasion names the gap without drama. Lines acknowledge that you went quiet, say you think of the person, and ask for the short version of their year. That is usually what a friend wants to read after a long silence.
For more help with what to write, see what to text a friend after a long time.
A Reconnect line might say 'I know we drifted a bit and I would love to fix that. Coffee or a call sometime soon?' It names the drift once, offers a concrete next step and does not ask the friend to explain themselves.
What is included in Free and Plus?
Free includes the first three lines for each occasion, with Shorter, Add a question, Warmer, shuffle, copy and edit. Plus adds the remaining five, so all eight lines per occasion are available. Locked lines show a small lock and open a short explanation of what Plus adds.
