Today's three: a short list you can finish

Today's three is the home screen of Nearfolk. Each day it shows at most three people to reach out to, birthdays first and then the friends who have waited longest for their usual rhythm. Not now sends someone to tomorrow with no penalty, and an empty list is a good day.

How does Nearfolk choose the three people?

The choice follows two simple rules. First come birthdays that fall in the next two days, the nearest one first. After that come friends who have almost reached, or passed, the rhythm you set for them, with the longest wait at the top.

The app counts a friend as ready once the time since your last talk reaches about 85 percent of their rhythm. A friend you set to monthly shows up a little before the month is over, so you have room to reach out early instead of late.

A friend with no talk logged yet is treated as never logged. They rank high, because the app has no date to compare, and the card says Never logged. If that is not the real situation, give them a rough date on their profile and they take the right place on the orbit.

  • Birthdays within two days are always considered first.
  • Then the friends with the longest wait compared with their own rhythm.
  • People you already talked to today are left out.
  • People you snoozed are left out until the snooze ends.
  • The list is cut at three.

What happens when you tap Reach out?

Reach out opens a small sheet with the friend's name, when you last talked and a suggested opening line. Below it are four actions: Message, Call, Card and Draft.

Message opens Apple Messages with the starter as the text. If you have no phone number for that person, Nearfolk opens the share sheet instead, so you can send the words through any app. Call opens the Phone app and is hidden when there is no number.

After you come back from Messages or Phone, Nearfolk asks Did you reach out? You can answer Message, Call, Card or In person, or choose Not yet or I already did. Logging takes one tap, and the history keeps a short timeline for each friend.

  1. Tap Reach out on one of the cards on Today.
  2. Read the suggested line, shuffle it or edit it.
  3. Tap Message, Call or Card.
  4. Come back and tap what you did: Message, Call, Card or In person.
  5. The friend moves back toward you on the orbit.

What does each card tell you?

Every card in Today's three shows the person, a one-line reason and a button. The reason is plain: Talked 5 weeks ago, Birthday in 2 days, or Never logged. It tells you why this person is here now, so the list never feels arbitrary.

Under the cards sit the reply jar, with your top two open replies, and a small recap for the month. Both are optional glances. The main action on Today is always the same: pick one card and reach out.

What does Not now do?

Not now moves that person out of today's list and they return tomorrow. Nothing is counted against you, and the app uses no guilt words such as overdue or failed.

If you want a longer break for someone, open their profile and choose Snooze for a week. A snoozed friend stays on your orbit and keeps drifting outward, so the picture stays honest, but they stay out of the daily three until the week ends.

Not now is a normal answer. Tomorrow is a fine time to try again.

How many notifications does it send?

At most one daily nudge, and only when someone is drifting. You pick the time during setup, with 18:30 as the default, and you can change it or turn it off in Me, then Notifications. The text is short: a name and a mild suggestion that they might like to hear from you.

Nearfolk schedules these reminders on your iPhone. There is no push server involved. Quiet hours from 22:00 to 08:00 are respected, so a nudge never lands late at night. Birthday reminders are separate and arrive three days before and on the day.

What if nobody needs a message today?

Then Today says so: nothing to do, your people are near. The hero shows the orbit with everyone close, and the greeting reads that everyone is near today.

A quiet day is part of the design. Nearfolk exists to make one small message easy at the moment it matters.

Is Today's three free?

Yes. The free plan keeps up to 10 people, and the daily three works for all of them. If you add more than the free limit through Plus and later let Plus lapse, nobody is deleted or hidden. Only adding new people is gated.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Nearfolk show only three people a day?

Three small suggestions are doable, while a long list tends to be abandoned. The cap keeps the daily step short and removes the feeling of being behind.

Can I choose who appears in Today's three?

You influence it through each person's rhythm, birthday and snooze. The app then ranks birthdays first and the longest relative wait next, so you never have to sort a list by hand.

What if I want to message someone who is not in the three?

Open People, tap the friend and use Message, Call or Card from their profile. Today's three is a suggestion and puts no limit on who you can contact.

Does Not now count against me?

No. It moves the person to tomorrow and nothing is recorded as a miss. Nearfolk has no overdue counters.
